An Optima battery is the most recognizable battery that you will find on the shelves today. There unique spiral cell shape and color coded tops are not only for looks, they also serve a purpose in the functionality of the battery. Optima makes three kinds of batteries with each color representing a specific purpose.
The Optima battery that is represented with the Yellow top is a work horse under the hood. A Yellow top Optima battery is a very high quality battery and is intended to be used for cranking and for deep discharges…it can take a beating if put to the test with voltage drain. These batteries can bounce back from a deep discharge and not be damaged at all. A good scenario would be if you needed good powerful cranking but still would like to have power for electronic accessories and the like. Stereos, Amps, IPod…it doesn’t matter this thing will still have the juice to start your car. An average price for a Yellow Top Optima battery will be about $220.
The Optima battery with the Red Top is the most common battery used and also the cheapest of the three, but don’t let the lower cost represent what the is battery can do. It can also do what the yellow can, but has a higher output for cranking. Intended for the utmost reliability when it comes to starting you vehicle. Used more in SUV’s, trucks and off road vehicles due to its’ resistance to impact and vibration. On average these batteries are fifteen times more vibration proof than a standard Interstate battery. These batteries are completely spill proof which is also nice in tough and rugged conditions. There is nothing worse than getting battery acid on your clothes or car. The Red Top Optima battery is also perfect for high heat locations…they are very weather proof. Simply put, this Optima battery is great for you bashers that are looking for a durable and reliable car battery. Average price is going to be the lowest of the three just around $190.
The Blue Top Optima battery would be more used in place of a deep cycle batter. Intended use is your RV, Boat or any application where you will be needing to use the battery over a long period of time. These are the king of trolling motors, but very pricey. They also have the quickest recharge time that I have seen. Optima claims the fast recharge is due how it efficiently distributes the power. Whatever the case these babies can take a charge like a champ. Optima battery charging will be just like any other battery. You can trickle charge on 2 amp and 6 amp. I’m sure you can charge more than 6, but I would not recommend it. For a high grade maintenance free marine batter…check these out. Average price is going to be around $220. Pep boys I believe has these, but I would check around online…a lot of good online retailers that sell the Optima battery.
